
Zain KSA has marked a new milestone reflecting its role as a digital enabler of vital sectors. Collaborating with the Innovation Empowerment Center at SEHA Virtual Hospital, it has enabled 11 consecutive remote robotic surgeries using advanced digital infrastructure purpose-built to deliver ultra-low latency and high reliability. The infrastructure provided the continuity and precision required for sensitive surgical procedures. During the initial operational phase, four consecutive remote robotic surgeries were successfully performed in a single day between SEHA Virtual Hospital and King Khalid University Hospital in Riyadh, demonstrating the digital infrastructure’s readiness and efficiency in supporting precision procedures.
The model remained operational throughout the same week, supporting several remote robotic surgeries across various specialties. These included sleeve gastrectomy, hysterectomy, inguinal hernia repair, cholecystectomy, resection of appendiceal tumors, and advanced gynecologic oncology procedures. The cases also included a right lower lobectomy, marking only the second remote lobectomy performed worldwide and the fifth remote robotic lung resection globally. These procedures demonstrated the solution’s capacity to support diverse surgical applications with dependable performance and stability.
This milestone was made possible by the digital infrastructure provided by Zain KSA in collaboration with SEHA Virtual Hospital’s Innovation Empowerment Center. The infrastructure enabled the surgeon’s console to connect with the robotic surgical system in the operating room in real time, transmitting the surgeon’s commands, live video, audio, and operational data over a dedicated network engineered for low latency and high reliability.
Zain KSA designed the solution around a dedicated digital network featuring primary and independent backup connections at each location, bandwidth isolated from other data traffic, and continuous end-to-end service monitoring throughout every procedure. The network served as an integral component of the robotic surgical environment, transmitting the surgeon’s commands to the robotic arms in real time while delivering high-definition surgical video and maintaining uninterrupted audio communication between the two medical teams. This supported precise movement and continuous coordination throughout each procedure.
